Regional Chaplaincy Coordinators
|
The following chaplains have been appointed by Chaplain Dwight Jennings to serve as Regional Chaplaincy Coordinators for their respective college/university region. They will provide pastoral care to the chaplains on their region and help raise denominational awareness of chaplaincy ministry.

CNUC/Canada Region: Chaplain Deborah Tanasiecuk
Chaplain Debbie is currently Protestant chaplain at Saskatchewan Penitentiary, a men's medium security correctional facility, in Prince Albert, SK where she has served since 2001. She received a Bachelor of Theology from Canadian Nazarene College (now Canadian Nazarene University College) and a Master of Divinity from the University of Winnipeg. Debbie was ordained in 1995 and has served in a variety of ministries including associate pastor, pastor, Dean of Women, and Dean of Student Life. Debbie is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry program at Nazarene Theological Seminary.
Debbie is married to Don and they have one daughter, Dori who is ten years old. She has an active role in her local Church of the Nazarene as associate pastor where she enjoys teaching adult Sunday School, preaching and participating in leadership development.

ENC/Eastern Region: Chaplain Barry Cook
Barry Cook graduated from Eastern Nazarene College in 1980 with a BA in Religion and psychology (Magna Cum Laude). In 1983 he received an MDiv form Nazarene Theological Seminary and was ordained on the Upstate New York district in 1985.
He was Associate Pastor at Valley Stream Church of the Nazarene, Pastor of Canastota Church of the Nazarene, and is currently the Pastor of New Life Community Church of the Nazarene (formerly Westbury).
Barry has been a chaplain for the New York State Corrections system for 15 years. Barry and his wife Paula have been married for 37 years and have four children and eight grandchildren.

MNU/North Central Region: Chaplain Ken Chamberlain
Ken Chamberlain was born in a parsonage in 1956. His father Bruce pastored Pilgrim Holiness (now Wesleyan) and Nazarene churches for about 45 years. Ken’s grandfather Ray was a Pilgrim Holiness missionary most of his life, serving for a while as District Superintendent to Jamaica and Grand Cayman.
Ken and his wife Mary pastored Nazarene churches in Bridgeport, Texas, Fritch, Texas, and Ozark, Missouri, serving for a total of 23 years. He resigned the Ozark church after Easter 2005 to become a full-time staff chaplain at St. John’s hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Ken and Mary have been married 29 years, and Mary has been a librarian for over 20 years. Their son Josh is a college senior in Springfield. Their daughter Heather graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia, and now lives and works full time in St. Louis.
Ken graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Mid-America Nazarene University in 1978. He graduated with a Master of Divinity in 1982 from Nazarene Theological Seminary.

NNU/Northwest Region: Chaplain Mervyn (Merv) Friberg
Merv Friberg, a staff Chaplain at Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital and Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center, is the Oregon State Representative to the Association of Professional Chaplains. Merv earned his Masters of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1978 and was ordained to the Christian Ministry within the International Church of the Nazarene in 1980. He gained Board Certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains in 1999.
Chaplain Friberg began full time ministry in 1978, pastoring churches in North Dakota and Oregon, followed by a position as Pastor of Lay Development in Central California. He served on many district committees including Dakota District Secretary of Ministerial Studies and a resource person and theological professor for the SE Asian pastors on Central CA. He has been a chaplain since 1993 and has been with Legacy Emanuel Hospital, a Level 1 Regional Trauma Center, since February 1996. Merv served on the Steering Committee of The Associated Chaplains of Oregon for five years, the leadership team of the Oregon chapter of the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) for ten years and was the Oregon State Representative for the APC.
He currently focuses on the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Pre-surgery but serves all six ICUs in the hospital. Merv is a certified ethics consultant, has published a paper in caring for persons with Alzheimer's Disease, and is an occasional guest lecturer on ethics at Linfield School of Nursing in Portland, Oregon.
Chaplain Merv resides in Vancouver, Washington with his wife, Linda. They have three married children and two grandsons. Merv's hobbies include getting acquainted with his grandsons, reading, walking with his wife, sailing and working on old Mercedes Benz.

ONU/Central Region: Chaplain Herman R. “Chip” Pieper, Jr.
Chaplain Pieper served the following Nazarene Churches: New Hampshire, Ohio Church of the Nazarene, 1984-1988; Northpoint Church of the Nazarene, Toledo, Ohio, 1988-1989; Stringtown Church of the Nazarene, Greenfield, Indiana; 1989-1995.
He received his Chaplaincy Endorsement with the Church of the Nazarene September 1995. Chaplain Pieper started the Pastoral Care Department at Hancock Memorial Hospital December, 1995. The staff increased from one chaplain, then added an assistant chaplain and secretary. Eighteen volunteer chaplains were added to the Pastoral Care Department. He served in this ministry from December 1995 through July 2003. Presently he is serving as the part-time chaplain for the Greenfield Fire Department having begun these duties in January 1997.
Chaplain Pieper has completed five units of Clinical Pastoral Education. He also serves as the local CISM Team Co-Director. He has had several courses in CISM. He is a Clinical Member of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Chaplain Affiliate with the Association of Professional Chaplains, and member of the Federation of Fire Chaplains. Additionally he has served on the Board of Director's for Hancock Hope House as President of the Board, which is a homeless shelter. Presently he is serving on the Board of Director's Leadership for Hancock County.

PLNU/Southwest Region: Chaplain Steve Seelig
Steve Seelig was raised in a pastor’s home, graduated from Pasadena College in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communications, earned a Master of Arts in Theology from Point Loma College in 1975, and a Master of Divinity in 1981 and Doctor of Ministry in 1993 from Fuller Theological Seminary. He was ordained in the Church of the Nazarene in 1977 and pastored growing churches for 23 years.
Chaplain Seelig has served as Senior Director of Planned Giving at Point Loma Nazarene University since 1996, where he has developed significant stewardship resources for many Christian ministries.
Since 1982 he has served in the United States Navy as a Chaplain in the Reserve in a variety of roles, and is currently the Region Southwest Deputy Chaplain, recently reaching the rank of Captain. Chaplain Seelig has taken specialized training in renewal counseling, ethics, alcohol rehabilitation, drug abuse, clinical pastoral education (CPE), clinical incident stress management (CISM), and is certified in estate and gift planning.
Steve has been married to Bobbi for 35 years, lives in San Diego, and has two married daughters, Stephanie and Stacie, and one grandson, Ben. Steve enjoys golf, tennis, kayaking, sailing and spending time with his family. .

SNU/South Central Region: Chaplain Gaetano Franzese
Chaplain Franzese was born and raised in a little village in southern Italy. He came in contact with the Church of the Nazarene through Rev. Paul Wire who was a missionary in Florence, Italy. He came to America at the age of twenty-four to attend college.
Franzese is a retired Army Chaplain. He provided spiritual leadership to multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and various international groups in numerous locations (USA, Korea, Italy, and SHAPE Belgium). He has pastored in various locations in the United States as well as in Italy. He has been, since July 2001, the Chaplain at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary-Maximum Security Prison, in McAlester, Oklahoma, where he has experienced that ministry is based on GRACE rather than RACE.
He and his wife Brenda reside in McAlester, Oklahoma. They have two outstanding children, Pietro and Gina, and two beautiful granddaughters, Alysha and Morgan.

TNU/Southeast Region: Chaplain Don Dunlap
Chaplain Dunlap was born in a Nazarene parsonage in Decatur, Alabama in 1942. In 1973, Nazarene Theological Seminary (NTS) conferred on him the Master's of Divinity degree. Previously (1969), he received the B.A. degree in religion from Trevecca Nazarene University (formerly College). Before his academic achievements, he served in the United States Navy.
Dunlap served 26 years as pastor in the Church of the Nazarene. Since pastoring, he has served as a chaplain in the hospital, fire, police, and workplace settings. He is president of Care@Work, Inc., a company that provides chaplaincy services in the workplace. He is also an adjunct instructor in Biblical Studies and Values at Trevecca Nazarene University.
Dunlap has been married to Nancy (Carter) for 37 years. She is the Director of Alumni Services at Trevecca Nazarene University. They have two daughters: Shelly and Lori. Shelly is the mother of their two grandsons: Austin and Andrew. Lori recently graduated from Trevecca and she is a student at NTS.
